2:1 - Be careful, because there will be false prophets in our world and communities too. They will secretly (unknown to you) introduce teachings that work to undermine faith. They will go so far as to deny Jesus as the sovereign Lord. I talked with a friend this week who listened to someone at a party explaining that Jesus never claimed to be God or Lord. That is a great example of a heresy that has been passing through our generations. It says that Jesus was a good teacher, but never said you had to accept Him as Lord and God. The problem with that idea is that Jesus repeatedly made it clear that He was one with God, calling Himself I AM (a name for God), forgiving sins which only God had the right to do, saying He was the only way to God. Jesus was and is the Son of God and one in nature with God.
2:2 - Many will follow these false teachers and false teachings, so be careful not to quickly accept something just because most other people who call themselves Christian agree with it. Check everything with the Bible not the crowd.
2:4-9 - then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.
2:8 - Are you tormented in your soul over sin?
2:10 - Ungodly = people who follow their flesh (desires) AND despise authority.
2:11 - Judgment comes from God and not from us.
2:12 - Our instincts are not always good. Many times our instincts lead us away from the will of God.
2:15 - They have left the straight way and wandered off.
2:19 - They promise them freedom while they themselves are slaves of depravity - So many things in life (money, doing it our way, overworking, ...) seem to promise us freedom, but they just make us more and more enslaved. The only one who can truly give us freedom is the One who is already free - Jesus.
2:20 - You can get so re-tangled in the world after walking with God that you end up worse than you were before you knew Jesus.
I want to recommend a tremendous book to anyone who ever gets on this blogspot. Whether you are someone who is faithfully Christian or you are someone who doesn't go to church "because of all the hypocrites" or you are someone in between, I want to recommend you pick up a copy of the book "Prodigal God" by Timothy Keller. It could forever change your faith, your soul and the passion and purpose with which you live.
